Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities on earth, in my opinion. And in fact in many other people's opinions. South Africa, from what we saw, is a beautiful place unlike almost any other, with a history of western influence as old as that of the United States.

...
Cape Town approaching dusk, under Table Mountain. Evening at the Waterfront, a new shopping areain Cape Town that was the perfect balm for shopping-starved westerners.
Camps Bay and the twelve apostles looking south; this is part of the mountain range that includes Cape Town's famous Table Mountain. The water was very very cold.
One of the townships or shantytowns in Cape town, the homes in Khayelitsha are made out any readily available materials. As we were nearing the holiday season, many people had left the township and returned to their villages leaving the place looking rather empty.
...
With paved streets, electricity and sidewalks, this shantytown makes some of the wealthier areas of Zambia look poor. Lots of small shops line the streets and walkways of this township.
Whatever it's made of, it's still home. Jen visiting with a "mother's program" in Khayelitsha for new mothers with HIV or AIDS, learning beading as a means of generating income.
